Prof. Dorota Fopp-Bayat from the Department of Ichthyology and Aquaculture at the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering of the UWM received a scientific award from the Marshal of the Warmia and Mazury Province. It is a team award.

There is no report in the scientific literature on a more polluted lake than Lake Karczemne in Kartuzy. However, reports are likely to appear soon describing it as clean, owing to UWM scientists, who were the first in Poland to carry out the “vacuuming” of the entire lake bottom.

In medical rescue, it is not only time that matters, but also temperature. Nothing can be done about time, but UWM employees have found a way to keep the body temperature of accident victims at the right temperature – a heated sleeping bag.

Doctors from the UWM School of Medicine carried out a Caesarean section using the so-called FAUCS method, also referred to as abdominal delivery, for the first time in Poland. This method is not only less painful, but it additionally allows mothers to recover faster. And what is most important, it reduces the risk of further complications in the newborn.

As Deloitte estimates, the average Pole, which also includes members of the UWM staff, drank 97 litres of beer in 2018. Dr Andrzej Wesołowski is far below the average, although he has been dealing with beer very intensively lately. However, he has not done it for its taste values.

In 50 years' time, the Earth will have run out of phosphorus, the main component of artificial fertilisers. Scientists from the University of Warmia and Mazury have developed a method for recovering phosphorus from wastewater and they are testing it on tomatoes.
