    If the construction work proceeds according to schedule, a new building will soon appear on the Kortowo campus - the new home of the faculties of Law and Administration and Social Sciences. The cornerstone laying ceremony took place on 2 October.

    First place for “Bel Canto”

    The “Bel Canto” Choir of Olsztyn, directed by Prof. Jan Połowianiuk of the Faculty of Arts of the UWM, won the 1st Prize from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage at the 39th International Festival of Orthodox Church Music in Białystok. Prof. Jan Połowianiuk also received an individual conductor’s award.

    Marta Zawadzka and Dawid Dąbrowski, doctoral students at the University of Warmia and Mazury, are taking part in a project aimed at studying the biodiversity of aquatic insects. About 80 young scientists from all around Europe are participating in it.

    A new Chemistry programme at the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture at the start of its operation will provide seven student laboratories and two seminar rooms with complete state-of-the-art equipment. The furnishing of student laboratories with furniture and equipment is just beginning.

    The rise of the UWM in the “Perspektywy” ranking

    The Perspektywy Foundation has published the 21st Ranking of Higher Education Institutions – Perspektywy 2020. The UWM moved up from the 9th to 7th place, ahead of the University of Gdańsk (8th place) and the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw (9th place), among others. Jagiellonian University is in the lead, the University of Warsaw is ranked second and the Warsaw University of Technology is ranked third.

    Dr hab. Jerzy Przyborowski, Professor of UWM, the previous Vice-Rector for Development of Education and Student Affairs, has become the new Rector of the University of Warmia and Mazury. He will assume his new post on 1 September.

    Dr. Aleksandra Lipka from the UWM School of Medicine has been granted a prestigious Fulbright Program scholarship. At Colorado State University, she will examine the role of the glucose transporter SLC2A8 (GLUT8) in placenta functioning.
