The meeting is organized on the occasion of the Polish publication of the memoires of Hans-Gert Pöttering, entitled “Na szczęście jesteśmy zjednoczeni. Moja europejska droga” (United for the Better: My European Way).
During the meeting it will be possible to get the author’s autograph and purchase the book. The introduction to the meeting will be presented by Prof. Arkadiusz Żukowski - director of the UWM Institute of Political Sciences.
Prof. Dr Hans-Gert Pöttering (*1945) is the only deputy who has continuously been a member of the European Parliament since the first direct elections in 1979. He held key positions in the European Parliament as the Chairman of the European People’s Party (1999-2007) and the President of the European Parliament (2007-2009). For many years, he has assisted and contributed to the success of this main European legislative body and the European Union. The politician, who grew up in Bersenbrück (Osnabrück District, Lower Saxony, a partner district for the Olsztyn District) in his autobiography recalls the beginning of parliamentary works and overcoming seemingly hopeless crises. He describes the reactions of the members of parliaments to the fall of communism and the reunification of Germany, i.e. the events that deeply changed the framework of the European politics. As a leader of the European Parliament, he participated in enlargement of the European Union to include northern, southern and eastern states, as well as in the development of European institutions through the Maastricht, Amsterdam, Nice and Lisbon Treaties. Pöttering’s path through European politics and his viewpoint on European relations reflects his confidence that Europe will cope with present and future challenges.
On his initiative, the House of European History has been established in the European Parliament in Brussels. Prof. Dr Hans-Gert Pöttering is currently the Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
