The student festival in Olsztyn is known as Kortowiada, after the name of the district of Kortowo, where the campus of the University of Warmia and Mazury is located. It is one of the largest student music events in Poland, featuring stars of Polish music for all ages. The open air concerts are attended by UWM students and Olsztyn inhabitants, as well as guests from all over Poland. The number of participants reaches 100,000. Year after year, more and more groups want to perform at the stage of one of the largest student music events in Poland. The event takes place every May and lasts 4-5 days. An official opening ceremony starts with the symbolic handing over of the keys to the city by the Olsztyn authorities to students.
The official anthem of the festival is the song entitled “Kortowiada”, performed by Enej.
In 2006 and 2008, Kortowiada was recognized as the safest student festival in Poland. In 2014, the jubilee 55th Kortowiada was organized, winning the first place (shared with the Rzeszów Student Festival) in the plebiscite for the best event of this type in Poland.
The main organizer of Kortowiada is the student government. The first student festival was held on 30 May 1958.
