Centre of simulation – centre of excellence

prof. Piotr Zaborowski, UWM Olsztyn
Thanks to this investment, the students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UWM, before they approach patient beds, will be able to practice all medical procedures on virtual patients and in simulators, under close-to-real-life conditions.

On 30 May 2016, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn signed an agreement with Skanska S.A., concerning the construction of the Medical Simulation Centre. The facility will be situated in the area of the University Clinical Hospital at 30 Warszawska Street.

The works under contract with Skanska consist of 2 tasks. The first task is an adjustment and adaptation to the requirements of the Centre, of premises in building no. 3 in which the Department of Didactics and Medical Simulation has been functioning for 2 years. The adaptation will allow a change in the purpose of building use from medical to educational. The value of this work is about 2.9 mln PLN.

The second task is the construction of a new facility (no. 3A) with lecture halls, and reconstruction of the necessary technical infrastructure. The building will be located in the immediate vicinity of the adapted building (no. 3), and connected with building no. 3 and with the building of the Department of Anatomy. It will have three storeys, including two storeys above ground.

The Medical Simulation Centre will house, among others, new didactic rooms simulating the following: an operating theatre, an intensive care unit, an emergency room, an ambulance, a labour room, a nurses' room and a surgical skills unit.

The construction will be carried out without interrupting the work of particular hospital units. It will be finished in June, 2017. Soon the cleaning work to prepare the area will be started. The cost of the whole investment is about 9 mln PLN.
