    “Vacuuming the lake” – an innovative method from the UWM

    There is no report in the scientific literature on a more polluted lake than Lake Karczemne in Kartuzy. However, reports are likely to appear soon describing it as clean, owing to UWM scientists, who were the first in Poland to carry out the “vacuuming” of the entire lake bottom.

    The “Bel Canto” Choir of Olsztyn, directed by Prof. Jan Połowianiuk of the Faculty of Arts of the UWM, won the 1st Prize from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage at the 39th International Festival of Orthodox Church Music in Białystok. Prof. Jan Połowianiuk also received an individual conductor’s award.

    Marta Zawadzka and Dawid Dąbrowski, doctoral students at the University of Warmia and Mazury, are taking part in a project aimed at studying the biodiversity of aquatic insects. About 80 young scientists from all around Europe are participating in it.

    The rise of the UWM in the “Perspektywy” ranking

    The Perspektywy Foundation has published the 21st Ranking of Higher Education Institutions – Perspektywy 2020. The UWM moved up from the 9th to 7th place, ahead of the University of Gdańsk (8th place) and the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw (9th place), among others. Jagiellonian University is in the lead, the University of Warsaw is ranked second and the Warsaw University of Technology is ranked third.

    A warming-up sleeping bag: every degree matters

    In medical rescue, it is not only time that matters, but also temperature. Nothing can be done about time, but UWM employees have found a way to keep the body temperature of accident victims at the right temperature – a heated sleeping bag.
